Steven J. Peterson currently serves as the Acting Administrator for the Farm Service Agency. In this position he provides national leadership and direction on agricultural farm program policy and the administration of farm loan programs. He also oversees the coordination and management of conservation, commodity, disaster, and farm marketing programs through the national network of over 2,100 county and 50 state offices. 

Peterson began his federal government career in Pennsylvania and served as a County Executive Director and State program specialist in Maryland. For the past 27 years he has worked in the FSA National Office in Washington, D.C., serving as a national program specialist, branch chief, director of the former FSA Production, Emergencies, and Compliance Division, and most recently Associate Administrator for FSA.

Peterson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a concentration in botany from Towson University in Towson, Maryland.

A native of Maryland, born and raised on a farm, since 1990, Peterson was a partner with his father on a 450-acre farm operation raising corn, soybeans and wheat but has taken a hiatus since 2016. Peterson has three adult daughters; he and his wife live in Maryland.
